About Kelly

On February 25, 2017, Kelly Fraser released her sophomore album, Sedna in English, and ᓄᓕᐊᔪᒃ (“Nuliajuk”) in Inuktitut. The album, which features a mix of English and Inuktitut lyrics, tells the history of Inuit and the rise of modern Nunavummiut through the ancient story of Sedna, Goddess of the Sea. Kelly hopes to strengthen Inuit culture and language, using both to motivate Inuit to do what they love.

The first single, Fight for the Rights, was a song aimed to swing the Land Claims vote on May 9, 2017. The second single, Sedna, was released in April, 2017.

"The goal of the album is to help heal those suffering from the effects of colonization, including the damaging effects of residential school and forced of relocation," says Kelly. "There is a great need for Inuit artists to directly speak to those affected from the past."

Kelly hopes to help Inuit in all arctic communities. with her music. She believes that contemporary music in Inuktitut will increase pride in Inuit identity, something which is sorely needed in order to heal those who suffer from the after effects of abuse from residential schools and the suffering of lost culture and traditions. Sedna is about breaking free from low self-esteems and releasing your inner Goddess or God.

Kelly wants to further spread her messages of inspiration, collaboration, and hope. She also hopes to educate non-Inuit about the everyday struggles Inuit go through and help to reverse common misunderstandings about Inuit and aboriginal people.
